Food Salt
Salt is best known as a flavour enhancer for cooking. Salt plays an important part in our lives as the body cannot function without salt. Food is the main source of salt intake. Salt is one of the five tastes, in addition to sweet, sour, bitter and savoury.
Salt is also used as a preservative: before the invention of the refrigerator, meat and fish used to be salted in salting boxes and stored in barrels – this process is called ‘salt curing’. Rubbing salt into the food will dry out any bacteria and prevent it from rotting.
