THE SALT INDUSTRY
How is salt made? |
|
How is salt made? Salt occurs naturally as rock salt in areas where past inland seas have dried up. Here it has been mined for centuries. It is the main element in seawater and is recovered by evaporating the seawater. Sea salt is produced using large basins filled with seawater. The water evaporates leaving the salt behind.
In some places large salt reserves can be found in the ground in salt mines. There are salt mines in the Netherlands and many other countries, some of which have vast reserves of the mineral.
There are two ways of recovering salt from the ground:
1. By mining: the salt is cut out of the ground.
2. By injecting water into the ground and pumping it up again with the dissolved salt. |
