Road salt Road salt is a melting agent. It lowers the melting point of water. The salt (almost always sodium chloride NaCl, sometimes calcium chloride CaCl2) mixes with the water on the road (ice or snow) to form brine. As the melting point of brine is lower than that of water, it will slow the freezing, thus reducing icy conditions. Brine is a mixture of water and salt. There must be enough traffic on the roads to ensure a good mix. Dissolving a substance in water will lower the melting point of the solution. For example, the melting point of water that contains 1ml sodium chloride will be approx. 1.86°C lower.
Different kinds of salts are used for road salt, such as vacuum salt, rock salt or sea salt. Sea salt is not commonly used for de-icing roads in the Netherlands. Vacuum salt is produced by pumping up underground salt in liquid form and then processing it in a factory to produce crystals. Vacuum salt is relatively pure and also seldom used for de-icing roads. Rock salt is extracted from salt mines and is the most commonly used salt for de-icing roads.
As well as bulk road salt, Zoutdepot also sells road salt in bags of 10 and 25 kg, and in buckets of 5 and 7,5 kg. |
